In June this year, the newly revised Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES for short) will come into effect. According to the national standard GB18107-2000 "Redwood", the number of redwood tree species included in the CITES Convention has increased to 7, and international trade management is more stringent. According to analysis by industry insiders, the implementation of the Convention is bound to have an impact on the import of mahogany raw materials in my country. The import management of mahogany materials is becoming more and more strict, and the price of domestic mahogany products, especially mahogany furniture, may rise. The number of mahogany tree species included in the CITES Convention has risen to 7. According to professional analysis, the international trade control of mahogany tree species will be stricter.
7 mahogany tree species included in the Convention
According to the Redwood Branch of the China Forest Products Industry Association, in March this year, the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora announced a new appendix revision list. According to the list, Dalbergia cochinchinensis, Dalbergia mesoamericana, Dalbergia dentata, Belizean Dalbergia, and Dalbergia lusi have been upgraded from Appendix III to Appendix II. So far, seven tree species in the "Redwood National Standard" have been included in Appendix I and Appendix II of the CITES Convention. According to the CITES Convention, these tree species must have import and export licenses or re-export certificates before they can be traded internationally.
According to the staff of the National Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office, the revision of the appendix of the CITES Convention will come into effect on June 12 this year. The increase of mahogany tree species in this convention is proposed by important countries of origin Thailand, Cambodia and some Central American countries, indicating that the export control of mahogany tree species in the country of origin will become more and more stringent. In the long run, the international trade of mahogany species will be tightened.
Jiang Xiaomei, a researcher at the Wood Industry Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Forestry Sciences, said that among the seven types of mahogany listed in the appendix of the CITES Convention, except for Brazilian black rosewood, Central American rosewood, and Belize rosewood products, which are relatively rare in the domestic market, sandalwood Red sandalwood, cochineal rosewood, Lushi black rosewood and dimpled rosewood are common raw materials for mahogany products in China. It is understood that Lushi's black rosewood is the top grade of black rosewood, and its origin is Madagascar. Due to excessive felling in the early years, the resources of this species are very scarce at present.
Mahogany furniture will not rise sharply in the short term
Many mahogany manufacturers said that since the beginning of this year, the purchase price of mahogany raw materials, especially Dalbergia cochinchinensis, has been rising. Yang Bo, chairman of Beijing Yuanhengli Hardwood Furniture Co., Ltd., said that the value of sandalwood red sandalwood, commonly known as lobular rosewood, has increased nearly 20 times in the past 13 years; Sandalwood belongs to the red rosewood category, and its value has also been rising in recent years. According to Wu Xinjian, president of Jinfei Redwood, the current price of Dalbergia cochinchinensis has increased by 30% compared with the end of last year, and the price of Dalbergia dinotata and Bali Dalbergia has also increased by 15%-30%.
Will the inclusion of mahogany species in the Convention lead to a sharp rise in the price of domestic mahogany furniture? In this regard, many manufacturers said that in the short term, the price of mahogany furniture will not rise sharply.
Zhu Dengfeng, general manager of Mingjia Red Sandalwood Club, said: "Nowadays, mahogany furniture manufacturers have relatively mature operating experience, and the price of materials is also constantly changing. Enterprises are expecting and preparing for this. Many enterprises are also stockpiling raw materials. Choose to raise prices slowly, and there will be no big fluctuations in furniture prices in the short term."
Many mahogany manufacturers in Beijing raised the prices of their products earlier this year. It is understood that the price of Xuanming Dianju products has been raised by about 15% at the beginning of this year; Yang Bo also said that the price of Yuan Henry products has been raised by 15%-20% at the beginning of the year, and the price will be raised again in October this year; Increase the price by 20%-30%.
